A Silk-Threaded Persian Jewish Rug, 19- 20th Century.

Approximately 158 x 137cm

The rug is adorned with intricate depictions of religious and biblical scenes, reflecting its cultural and spiritual significance within the Jewish community in Persia (modern-day Iran).

At the centre of the rug, two angels flank the Tablets of the Ten Commandments, a central symbol in Jewish faith, with rays of light emanating from the tablets, representing divine wisdom and law. Above the tablets, Hebrew inscriptions add a sacred element to the piece. Surrounding this central motif are a series of biblical scenes:

On the top left, a depiction of the Binding of Isaac, with Abraham preparing to sacrifice his son Isaac, an event central to Jewish tradition.
To the right, there is Moses striking the rock to bring forth water, a reference to one of the miracles during the Israelites' journey through the desert.
Along the bottom, other significant figures are depicted, including a representation of Moses holding the Ten Commandments and a scene of Elijah’s ascent to heaven in a chariot of fire, surrounded by angels.
The rug is framed by a beautifully ornate border with floral and geometric patterns, characteristic of Persian textile design, merging Persian craftsmanship with Jewish religious themes. The fine silk-threaded embroidery gives the rug a luxurious sheen and highlights the detailed imagery and vibrant colours.

This type of rug would likely have been used as a wall hanging in a synagogue or a Jewish home, serving both as a decorative and religious piece.
